About the Artist
The Visiting Artist Lecture Series is excited to welcome our second artist of the 2017-18 series to Spokane. Michelle Lopez will be here February 28 and March 1,
speaking at three different venues in the community.
Michelle Lopez is a Brooklyn-based sculptor and installation artist whose work addresses the complexities of modernity, presenting a poetic layering of ideas.
Michelle's work first made an impression when her sculpture "Boy" was included in P.S.1/MoMa's Greater New York exhibition in 2000. Her forms reveal reverence to
specific materials while presenting critical cultural analysis through use of those materials. In her sculpture "Blue Angels", a crumpled airplane-wing-like form
made of stainless steel, powder-coated aluminum and rivets, she derives a narrative from a depiction of technological failure. Lopez physically bent and crushed
the steel herself in a personal and physical performance. However this violent process and subsequent mangled form also questions the consequences of power and
the military industrial complex.
"For me, material is everything. The material's origin and the artist’s manipulation of material are what determine if a thing becomes a work of art or
not." – Michelle Lopez
Michelle Lopez has exhibited nationally and internationally with solo shows at venues such as Alt, Instanbul, Galeried, Gaillard, Paris, Aldrich Museum of
Contemporary Art in Connecticut, Deitch Projects in NY and Simon Preston Gallery in NY. Her work has been included in exhibitions at various institutions
including The Carpenter Center for Visual Arts at Harvard, Bass Museum of Art, Miami and the Yerba Beuna Arts Center for the Arts. In 2010 She was a recipient of
the New York Foundation for the Arts Sculpture Fellowship and a NYFA Fiscal Sponsorship Grant in 2009. A new solo exhibition "House of Cards" opens at Simon
Preston Gallery, NY in January 2018.
Michelle Lopez She has taught at Yale, Columbia, NYU, the School of Visual Arts, and Barnard in their graduate and undergraduate programs. She currently heads the
Sculpture division in the Fine Arts Program at University of Pennsylvania's School of Design. She is represented by Simon Preston Gallery in New York.
